You’ve probably heard the name Sebastián Yatra since the Disney animated movie “Encanto” came out, but who is the singer who gave life to the Oscar-nominated song “Dos Oruguitas”?

The Latin pop star was already highly recognized in Latin America, the United States, Spain, and Portugal. However, his name was on everyone’s lips when he performed the song from the Oscar-winning movie “Encanto.”

The beginnings of Sebastián Yatra

Sebastián Yatra, whose name is Sebastián Obando Giraldo, was born in Medellín, Colombia in 1994. He spent part of his childhood there. At the beginning of 2000, his family decided to emigrate to the United States due to the political and violent crisis the South American country was struggling with.

Yatra’s family settled in Miami, Florida. At the age of twelve, Sebastián began to find his way in music after participating in a musical adaptation of High School Musical in his high school.

Sebastian then abandoned his old desire to pursue soccer and delved into his new passion by taking singing, guitar, and dance lessons. His stage name, “Sebastian Yatra,” came to life after his mother suggested he should use the word “Yatra,” which in Hindu means “sacred path to the divine.”

How his career took off

Sebastián Yatra’s artistic career began in 2014, when he released two songs that he himself composed, a ballad titled ‘El Psicólogo‘ which would reach the top of the charts in several Latin American countries, and ‘Para Olvidar‘ in collaboration with Colombian singer El Dandee. The success of both songs put him on the radar of many artists. It led him to participate in the song ‘Por Fin Te Encontré‘ with Juan Magán and the duo Cali y El Dandee, which obtained the Digital Platinum Record in Spain. The music video exceeded one million views in just three days.

Sebastián’s career was officially a success.

In 2016, he released “Traicionera,” quickly hitting the top of the charts in Latin America, Spain, and the United States. Sebastián consolidated as a world-famous artist and obtained several multiplatinum albums thanks to his singles that have reached the top of global charts.

Since the beginning of his career, Sebastián has received one Grammy Award nomination, eight Latin Grammy Award nominations, four Latin American Music Award nominations, three Lo Nuestro Award nominations, four Latin Billboard Awards nominations, and many more. The singer has even collaborated with the greatest music exponents in Latin America and the United States, such as Daddy Yankee, One Republic, and the Jonas Brothers.

In 2021, Sebastian was part of the Disney movie “Encanto” giving voice to the song composed by Oscar nominee Lin-Manuel Miranda, “Dos Oruguitas.” The song’s success was so great that he took an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song and Sebastian had the opportunity to sing it live at the awards ceremony on March 27, 2022.
