For those who are into R&B and blunt, cut-throat emotional lyrics — Jessie Reyez’s music is for you. The Canadian-Colombian artist Jessie Reyez is currently preparing for the release of her sophomore album “Yessie,” which already sounds like the perfect go-to after a complicated breakup. We’ve all been there, amiguis.
To anticipate the upcoming project, Reyez dropped her newest single, “Mutual Friend,” which gives her fans another fresh taste of what’s to come on Sept. 16.
“Mutual Friend” explores what happens with the feelings that inevitably remain after a hard separation. The song talks about how Jessie is releasing any leftover emotions from it while embracing her independence.
The theatrical Peter Huang video shows scenes of rage and dying flowers that are metaphors for the relationship above. Reyez’s distinctive and passionate vocals paired with the track’s piano-driven melody make the track that much more powerful. The track finishes off with an orchestral touch that’s fitting for the heart-wrenching words that Reyez croons about.
For those who aren’t familiar with the artist, Reyez’s past Kiddo & Being Human In Public EP and debut album Before Love Came To Kill Us (2020) put her on the radar. According to her press release, the album charted Top 5 on Billboard’s R&B Album Chart, accumulated over 1.2 billion global streams, and earned the title of Top Female Debut Album and Top R&B Album of 2020.
In the last two years, she made appearances in two of the nation’s most important and massive festivals. She performed at Lollapalooza in Chicago, IL, in 2021 and Coachella Music Festival in Indio, CA, in 2022.
Besides those festivals, she also was the open artist for Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever world tour. “Being an opener is never easy, but […] everyone I’ve met has been so welcoming, so thx for the love to everyone [who’s] been singing along,” she wrote about her tour experience.
With this in mind, it’s no wonder that Reyez’s upcoming work is anticipated by many. In June, she released “Fraud,” her first solo single since her debut album. Since the single’s release, it has garnered over one million views on Youtube.
With these two new hard-hitting singles about a sour heartbreak, Yessie is becoming one of the most long-awaited-for albums that will surely strike a chord with many listeners going through the same dilemma.
